By way of Chicago, IL, Akilah Smith is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University with a degree in Human Development and Family Science. Akilah has always been very passionate about social justice issues and worked hands-on with underserved communities throughout her undergraduate career. Working closely with youth to promote social and emotional development, Akilah cemented her decision to go into education policy to advocate and project the voices of children and families as the center of reform. Throughout her time here at Brown, she plans to focus on community access and outreach to assure families feel heard when it comes to making decisions about education. Akilah hopes to become a large force in creating a more equitable education system, specifically for Black and Brown students. Outside of her passion for education, Akilah loves hiking, traveling, photography, and finding the best tacos in any city she visits.
