Biography

Alex Yates is a graduate of Penn State ('11) and a Teach For America alumni (DC '15). He has taught middle school special education for the past six years in DC, VA, and RI. Prior to teaching Alex was a grant director for a YMCA in Northern Virginia that provided free after-school programming and homework support for English learners and low-income families. As a queer person of trans experience, Alex has always worked to create inclusive classrooms and resources for teachers to support all of their students. Alex has used his voice to present at multiple education conferences sharing strategies and resources to support transgender and gender nonconforming students with a consistent lens of intersectionality.  Alex hopes to make an impact on teacher diversity and retention after studying at Brown.
