Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

Biography

Kanan Brent (she/her) is an English MAT student at Brown University. She completed her undergraduate education at the University of Rochester in 2023, graduating with a B.A. in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies and Public Health. Her undergraduate thesis analyzed how female writers in the 20th century used fiction and non-fiction writing to understand and expose the patriarchal oppression they experienced. Prior to her admission to Brown, Kanan worked at a maternal health non-profit in New York City, focusing on health education, community-centered engagement, and advocacy. Her passion for education, love of literature, and desire to work hands-on with young people led to her decision to shift her career into teaching. Kanan’s hope is to inspire future generations of students to love learning, as her teachers did for her, and empower them to engage with the world through reading, writing, and discussion. She is excited to be at Brown and can’t wait to begin her career as a secondary English teacher!
