Rui Zhang
Biography
Rui Zhang is currently a graduate student at Brown University pursuing initial certification in Secondary Math Education. She prefers to be called Helen and uses she/her pronouns. She earned her dual bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Sciences and Chinese Studies from Binghamton University. During her undergraduate studies, she received the Provost Promise Scholarship, Summa Cum Laude honors and multiple Dean’s List recognitions. She was also once selected as the sole undergraduate recipient of a highly competitive university-wide internship, receiving a $3,000 research stipend and 4 academic credits.
During college, she has worked as a University Math Tutor and served as a Teaching Assistant for Calculus I and several Chinese language courses. In these roles, she supported students in understanding course concepts, graded assignments and provided feedback, and helped manage course-related tasks. In addition, she participated in the university’s Youth Initiative Program, providing academic and social support to elementary school students.
In the future, Helen wants to become a secondary school math teacher while considering pursuing a Ph.D. in education. She is very passionate about teaching and helping students to gain confidence in math.
