Fifth-Year MAT

Brown University undergraduates have the opportunity to stay at Brown for a fifth year and earn their Master of Arts in Teaching.

The fifth-year master's degree option allows Brown undergraduates to continue at the university for a master's degree after completing their bachelor's degree. We prepare our MAT candidates for secondary teaching certification (grades 7-12) in the following areas. Concentrators in these fields and allied concentrations are encouraged to apply.

The application deadline is January 15 of senior year. If you would like to be notified when the application is available for 2025, please complete this brief form.

Application Process and Materials

  • Students apply by January 15 of their senior year.
  • Students from all concentrations can apply but need to meet discipline-specific coursework requirements to be considered for admission. These requirements can be found on the How to Apply page, listed by content area.
  • The application fee is waived for Brown students.
  • Students are able to take EDUC 1675 (Principles of Teaching and Learning) as an undergraduate and apply that credit toward the MAT degree.
  • When creating your application please do not use your Brown email address. If you request a deferral, the Brown email address becomes inactivated.

Application requirements
