Combined Baccalaureate/Master of Arts in Teaching

Start working on your MAT while completing your bachelor's degree.

Brown undergraduates can start working toward a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) while completing their bachelor’s degree in English, History, Math, Science, or related fields.

Through the Combined Baccalaureate/MAT pathway, students can:

  • Take up to two MAT courses during senior year, reducing graduate course load and tuition;
  • Get early advising from MAT faculty and access opportunities to build teaching experience;
  • Transition into our one-year MAT program, which blends intensive coursework, hands-on teaching, and personalized coaching.

This equity-driven program prepares students to teach grades 7–12 in:

To qualify, students must complete their undergraduate major in the subject they plan to teach. The MAT degree requires 36 credits, with up to two courses double-counted toward both degrees.

Financial Aid

In addition to saving on tuition by taking two MAT courses as a senior, students who apply early for the Combined Bacc/MAT program have access to the best financial aid options, including first-come, first-served scholarships. Students in any teaching subject may also apply for an Urban Education Fellowship
