Frequently Asked Questions

When Will BSHS Take Place?

Classes will meet on weekdays from 8AM-12PM from July 7-25, 2025. Because BSHS includes project-based learning, it is important that students attend all class sessions. Due to the short length of the program, students should not sign up for BSHS if they have conflicting obligations in July.

How Many Classes Do Students Take?

Students register for two classes, ranking their preferences. Each class is two hours long. While we do our best to accommodate choices, placement depends on the number of instructors in each subject area.

Who Can Apply?

BSHS is open to local high school students entering grades 9-12 who will be at least 14 years old by September. Priority enrollment is given to students from Providence and Central Falls public schools.

Students must live within commuting distance of Brown University.

How Much Does It Cost?

BSHS will be free of charge to all students.

Who Teaches the Classes?

Classes are taught by teams of Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates at Brown University.

Teaching teams are led by exemplary mentor teachers from local schools. Teacher Education faculty supervise and collaborate with all of the teams.

Do Students Receive Credit?

Some schools grant credit for participation in BSHS. Questions regarding credit should be directed to your school.

Will There Be After-School Programming?

Yes. Optional BSHS daily after-school programming will run from 1PM-3PM for all interested students.

The options are:

The Mathematical Art of Mosaics: In this program, students have the opportunity to explore the mathematics of mosaic art. They will then use their understanding of geometric shapes and patterns to create mosaics of their own!

Intro to fabrication at the Brown Design Workshop: Learn how to translate your ideas into physical objects using the various tools and materials at the Brown Design Workshop! We will be learning the basics of woodworking, and the course will expose students to 3-D printers, laser-cutters, and more to make a personalized keepsake box.

Sports and Games with Brown Athletics: Join Brown University student-athletes for organized sports and games after school. We'll get some exercise and learn athletic fundamentals using Brown's facilities.
