Kamala Harris Has a Chance to Make School Desegregation a Key Issue

In an op-ed in Education Week, Assistant Professor of Education Jonathan Collins shares his thoughts on the possibility of Senator Kamala Harris building a more equitable educational system should she become vice president.

In an opinion piece in Education Week, Assistant Professor Jonathan Collins discusses the memorable Democratic primary debate moment when now presidential nominee Joe Biden and his vice-presidential running mate Sen. Kamala Harris clashed over desegregation busing. Should they win the election in November, Collins says Harris "could decide to champion school desegregation."

"As vice president of the United States, Kamala Harris could have the opportunity to do something special—to take the names and faces of the people from her childhood who never got the chance to attend a school equipped to meet their needs. She could use that as a North Star to build an educational system that is more equitable and more accountable to the kids who need it most."
