What drew you to the MAT Program?
I was drawn to the MAT program because of the residency opportunity. The program allows MAT students to be in a classroom for the entire school year learning and growing alongside a mentor teacher. This is unique in that you get to learn about the community’s resources and culture, get to know the students before you start teaching, and see the daily ins and outs of the classroom.

How did your undergraduate and work experiences prior to this program inspire you to go into teaching and pursue an MAT degree?
After graduating from URI, I was doing field research on an endangered bat species throughout the United States. As I was working, I’d often talk to landowners, park visitors, and community members about our research. I loved being able to share my knowledge and experience with others in order to get them curious and excited about science. In a pivot, I began working at a science center where I had the opportunity to teach an outdoor STEM enrichment program to grades K-4. It inspired me to pursue a career in formal education where I could teach science to secondary school students.

What is your favorite part about living in Providence and being at Brown?
My favorite part about living in Providence and being at Brown is the beauty of the architecture on and around campus.

What has been a highlight of your experience in the MAT program so far?
The highlight of my experience in the MAT program so far is the relationships I have built with my science cohort members. At the start of the fall semester, we ate lunch together almost every day on the main green. We have become so close in such a short amount of time, and I know that we will continue to be lifelong friends and colleagues.

Where are you doing your student teaching, and what do you like most about the experience there so far?
I am doing my student teaching at Central Falls High School. My favorite part about my experience there so far is getting to know all of my students and celebrating their successes with them.

How do you like to spend your free time?
In my free time, I enjoy crafting, crocheting, hiking along nature trails, and thrifting!

Who is your #1 inspiration in your life?
My mom is my #1 inspiration in my life. Raising me and my 2 sisters as a single mother after my father suddenly passed away when I was a child was not an easy task. She gave me the best childhood I could have ever asked for and I am so thankful for everything she has done for me. She is the strongest woman I know and has sacrificed so much in order for me to be successful. I love you, Mom!
