Raising Humble Learners: Asian Immigrant Families' Socialization and Children's School Experiences

Professors Jin Li and Yoko Yamamoto co-wrote a chapter for a newly released book that examines the experiences of internationally migrant families as they navigate the local schools in their new cultural context.

In the newly released book "Composing Storylines of Possibilities: Immigrant and Refugee Families Navigating School," Visiting Assistant Professor Yoko Yamamoto and Professor Jin Li co-wrote Chapter 3 "Raising Humble Learners: Asian Immigrant Families' Socialization and Children's School Experiences."

Findings generated from their longitudinal research demonstrate nuanced and complex pictures of East Asian immigrant families' socialization. While home-school cultural differences may bring various challenges to Asian American/immigrant students in US classrooms, culturally rich socialization practices bring assets to these children, especially those from low-income backgrounds. Interviews reveal young children's emerging learning-related virtues and strong family ties that foster their learning motivation.
