On April 24, Brown Education faculty members participated in an immersive one-day program for local Rhode Island high school students called College Day at Brown. Organized by leaders from the University’s Annenberg Institute for School Reform and Office of the President, this university-wide program was designed to give Providence-area students a glimpse of what it's like to be in a college setting and to learn about higher education opportunities.
Two professors, Diane Silva Pimentel and Tricia Kelly, hosted an Urban Teach Conference as part of the program. The conference aimed to inspire students from urban Rhode Island schools to become future educators and serve urban communities. The students had the opportunity to network, develop community, engage with important questions related to education in urban contexts, and meet local educators of color who are leading in innovative and impactful ways.
Another group learning experience was led by Professors Tricia Kelly and Andrea Flores. Kelly and Flores organized a session on multilingualism that explored how language connects to identity. During the session, students made self-portraits that mapped where they experience language in their bodies and presented them to each other through a "gallery walk."
