Name and Year: Hannah Stoch '26
Position: Social Media and Communications Assistant, Department of Education
Concentrations: Education Studies, and Science, Technology, & Society
What inspired you to concentrate in Education Studies?
I knew when I started at Brown that I was interested in studying learning, but did not know how that interest would manifest. I took courses in neuroscience, psychology, and education to build an interdisciplinary understanding of how people learn biologically, cognitively, and pedagogically. I chose to concentrate in Education Studies because the courses allow me to focus on the social and institutional factors that affect student learning. I also greatly appreciate the Education Studies DUG and Education Department communities, which welcome and support me and anyone interested in better schools.
What is a particular educational issue or topic that you are passionate about?
One aspect of education that I am passionate about is neurodivergence and mental health in the classroom. I believe greater communication and collaboration with students help create a safer and richer learning environment. I am particularly interested in academic environments for students whose support needs are too high for traditional school environments.
What is your favorite EDUC course at Brown?
One of my favorite EDUC courses so far is EDUC 1675: Psychology of Teaching and Learning, taught by Professor Katie Rieser. We read classic and contemporary texts in education and psychology and discussed which ideas to take into pedagogical practice and which led to more harm. We have thoughtful group discussions which allowed us to grow into a community of people passionate about good equitable pedagogy. I recommend the course to anyone interested in teaching or a unique perspective on classic psychology.
What are your career aspirations in the field of education?
As a rising junior, I’m still figuring out my career aspirations! I want to work where I can support students and community members. This might happen as a classroom teacher, but I am also interested in non-profit work and librarianship.
Are you involved in any student or community organizations?
I am the Digital Archives and Communications Coordinator at the Curricular Resource Center (CRC), an organization on campus that connects students with academic and community resources, promoting accessibility and exploration. Come talk to me during my open hours about all things teaching and learning! I am a co-president of Challah for Hunger at Brown, an organization that sells baked goods and donates proceeds to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. I volunteer with Partnership for Adult Learning (PAL) and Best Buddies, both programs that support intellectually and developmentally disabled adults in Rhode Island.
