Name: Sofia Fontaine
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Program: MAT, English cohort
Education: Major in English (Creative Writing), Minor in Education Studies at Barnard College

What drew you to the MAT Program?

I was really looking for a yearlong program that gave me hands-on teaching experience and solid support along the way. Also, after doing the ‘college in New York City’ thing, I was ready for something a bit quieter for grad school.

What has been a highlight of your experience in the MAT program so far?

The highlight has definitely been my students and the friendships I’ve made. My students are such a kind and vibrant group, and getting to know them has been a joy. Alongside that, the cohort has become really close—whether in class or during residency, we’re in this together. I’m really grateful for the connections I’ve made so far.

Where are you student teaching, and what do you like most about the experience there so far?

I’m doing my student teaching at Blackstone Academy Charter in Pawtucket! So far, I am loving being in such a tight-knit school community.

What are you most excited to teach?

I’m honestly most excited to teach Macbeth in January, which is just my nerdy English teacher's answer.

What is something you enjoy about living in Providence?

Right now, Providence is fully embracing the classic New England fall energy, and I’m loving it. I feel like I’m living in a postcard.
