Biography

Hometown: San Diego, California
Education: Simmons University, Bachelor's Degree in International Relations and Political Science, Class of 2022. Rhode Island College, Master's degree in Elementary Education, class of 2023

Emily Plummer is from San Diego, California, and moved to Providence during the summer of 2022. She is an elementary school teacher in Central Falls, Rhode Island, and will teach throughout her studies at Brown. Emily became interested in education policy while studying international relations and political science at Simmons University in Boston, Massachusetts. She was able to immerse herself in local politics through various internships at the City of Boston, the Mayor’s Office of Women’s Advancement, the Massachusetts State Treasurer’s Office of Economic Empowerment, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives.

Emily’s interest in educational equity and passion for working with children motivated her to pursue Teach For America as a postgraduate pathway. As a Teach For America Rhode Island 2022 corps member, Emily began her career in education as a 5th-grade science teacher and quickly found her love in advocating for high-quality, rigorous educational experiences for all students. During Emily’s first year of teaching, she also pursued her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Rhode Island College. During her meaningful experience as a first-year teacher, Emily saw firsthand the dire need for increased support and allocation of resources in an effort to close the opportunity gap for students who are disproportionately affected. Through the UEP program, Emily hopes to find out answers to the questions she has run into as an educator in Providence and seeks to be an agent for positive change within the educational system at the local level. Outside of being an educator and graduate student, Emily enjoys facetiming her family in California, staying active outside, and exploring all the things that Rhode Island has to offer.
