Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

Biography

Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Education: Barnard College of Columbia University, BA in English (Creative Writing), 2024

Sofia Fontaine (she/her) is a graduate student at Brown University pursuing a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary English. Sofia was born and raised in northern New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles after middle school. She has maintained a passion for literature her entire life, always adoring and excelling in her English classes.

Sofia attended Barnard College and received her Bachelor’s in English, with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in Education Studies. During her time at Barnard, she took courses with some of her favorite authors, became Editor-in-Chief of a popular student news blog, and spent a semester studying Shakespeare and contemporary writing at Pembroke College of Cambridge University. Sofia’s undergraduate career not only solidified her passion for literature, but deepened her fascination with language in educational spaces, an interest passed down from her parents who were both middle school English teachers. Her commitment to the MAT program is borne from these two loves and she is most excited to introduce a future student to their favorite book, as her former teachers did for her.

Outside of the classroom, Sofia enjoys going to concerts, thrifting, reading, and drinking tea.
