Investing in educational equity and opportunities

We are committed to diversity and inclusion in teacher education — and the teaching profession — and don't want cost to be a barrier to entry. That's why Brown has significantly expanded its commitment to merit and need-based aid to MAT students. Students with demonstrated need are eligible for scholarships that cover full tuition, living stipends, health fees, and insurance.

Although graduate students are considered independent for most types of federal aid, the MAT program does not recognize the status of the independent student in the awarding of institutional need-based scholarships, regardless of age, marital status, or the number of years in which they have been self-supporting. The policy ensures that institutional funds are allocated to students who have demonstrated limited family resources.

For more information on federal financial aid, visit the University's Office of Financial Aid. If you have questions regarding sensitive financial information, please contact the Graduate School's financial aid office at GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu or (401) 863-2721.

International applicants and applicants without an SSN are not eligible for federal loans but are eligible for scholarship aid from the MAT program. All applicants will automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships for the program.

To apply for institutional need-based aid, students should submit the CSS profile. The CSS code for Brown University is 3189. Applicants from Iran and North Korea cannot submit the CSS Profile and should email GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu for an alternative solution.

If you have questions regarding sensitive financial information, please contact the Graduate School's financial aid office at GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu or (401) 863-2721.

MAT applicants in all disciplines are eligible for an Urban Education Fellowship (UEF). As part of Brown University’s commitment to the local Providence community, the Fellowship offers loan forgiveness if the Fellow teaches for three years after program completion in a school in Rhode Island's urban core region.

To apply for this fellowship, you will need to submit a separate essay with your program application describing how your experiences and commitments prepare you to be a strong teacher for Providence-area urban youth.

  • Instructions for how to request an application fee waiver can be found within the application.
  • The Papitto Opportunity Connection invests in rising teachers by providing financial support for Urban Education Fellows so they can focus on academics, and aims to contribute to increasing the number of BIPOC teachers in schools. MAT students who are awarded an Urban Education Fellowship will automatically be considered for this scholarship.
  • City Year corps members and alumni for at least one year of service and City Year staff members employed for at least two years are eligible for a 25% Tuition Scholarship as well as an application fee waiver. Please indicate your affiliation within the application and request a service verification letter from City Year for consideration.
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Grad PLUS Loans (U.S. Department of Education) can help to pay for the cost of attendance.
  • External scholarships, fellowships and grants. You can find free, online scholarship searches through several websites such as FinAid.org and Fastweb.
Completing and submitting the government’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) allows us to determine your financial need and makes you eligible for federal aid.
The College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile is another tool we use to determine financial need. You can also include information about your family’s special financial circumstances.
