Cost and Financial Aid

We offer generous merit and need-based scholarships up to the full cost of tuition, living stipends, health fees, and insurance.

Tuition for the 2022-2023 academic year is $7,835 per course or $62,682 for the eight courses required for the MAT degree. Tuition for the next academic year will be set early in the calendar year and generally increases by 3-5% each year.

The MAT program awards both need and merit-based scholarships, with the majority of funds dedicated to need-based awards. All applicants will be considered automatically for limited merit-based funds. Domestic and International applicants are encouraged to apply for a need-based scholarship by completing either the FAFSA or the CSS Profile and submitting it with their application.

Important Information

Although graduate students are considered independent for most types of federal aid, the MAT program does not recognize the status of the independent student in the awarding of institutional need-based scholarships, regardless of age, marital status, or the number of years in which they have been self-supporting. The policy ensures that institutional funds are allocated to students who have demonstrated limited family resources. Parental information may be waived in exceptional circumstances. Those interested in petitioning to exclude parental information should contact Diane Silva Pimentel for more information.

Applicants whose FAFSA information may be inaccurate (for example, due to the loss of employment, or other recent changes in financial circumstances that would make past financial information inaccurate), can fill out the Special Circumstances form.

For more information on federal financial aid, visit the University's Office of Financial Aid. If you have questions regarding sensitive financial information, please contact the Graduate School's financial aid office at GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu or (401) 863-2721.

International applicants and applicants without an SSN are not eligible for federal loans but are eligible for scholarship aid from the MAT program. All applicants will automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships for the program.

To apply for institutional need-based aid, students should submit the CSS profile. The CSS code for Brown University is 3189. Applicants from Iran and North Korea cannot submit the CSS Profile and should email GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu for an alternative solution.

Applicants whose information may be inaccurate (for example, due to the loss of employment, or other recent changes in financial circumstances that would make past financial information inaccurate), can fill out the Special Circumstances form.

If you have questions regarding sensitive financial information, please contact the Graduate School's financial aid office at GS_Financial_Aid@brown.edu or (401) 863-2721.

MAT students in Mathematics and Science disciplines can apply for the Urban Education Fellowship (UEF). As part of Brown University’s commitment to the local Providence community, the Fellowship offers loan forgiveness if the Fellow teaches for three years after program completion in a school in Rhode Island's urban core region.

To apply for this fellowship, you will need to submit a separate essay with your application describing how your experiences and commitments prepare you to be a strong teacher for Providence-area urban youth.

  • The Papitto Opportunity Connection invests in rising teachers by providing financial support for Urban Education Fellows so they can focus on academics, and aims to contribute to increasing the number of BIPOC teachers in schools. MAT students who are awarded an Urban Education Fellowship will automatically be considered for this scholarship.
  • City Year corps members and alumni for at least one year of service and City Year staff members employed for at least two years are eligible for a 25% Tuition Scholarship as well as an application fee waiver. Please indicate your affiliation within the application and request a service verification letter from City Year for consideration.

Completing and submitting the government’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) allows us to determine your financial need and makes you eligible for federal aid.
The College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile is another tool we use to determine financial need. You can also include information about your family’s special financial circumstances.
